A Perfect Circle (souvent abrégé APC) est un groupe de rock alternatif formé à l'initiative du guitariste Billy Howerdel.
Howerdel a par le passé officié avec de nombreux groupes dont Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins, Fishbone, Guns N' Roses et Tool en tant que guitariste d'appoint et ambitionne de monter son propre groupe. Il enregistre quelques démos qu'il fait écouter à Maynard James Keenan, le chanteur de Tool. Maynard s'intéresse au projet et propose à Howerdel d'en être l'interprête. Howerdel, alors plutôt à la recherche d'une voix féminine, hésite un certain temps avant d'accepter la proposition.
Howerdel se charge du recrutement et déniche Tim Alexander, le batteur de Primus, le guitariste Troy Van Leeuwen (ex-Failure) et la bassite/violoniste Paz Lenchantin (futur-Zwan). Le groupe retravaille les démos mises au point par Howerdel et enregistre son premier album Mer de Noms en 2000. À cette époque, Tool est en négociation avec son propre label, ce qui donne la possibilité à Keenan de s'investir dans le projet.
La composition du groupe connait quelques bouleversements. Tim Alexander est remplacé avant l'enregistrement du premier album par Josh Freese, des Vandals. Lenchantin quitte le groupe pour rejoindre le nouveau projet de Billy Corgan, Zwan, tandis que Van Leeuwen intègre Queens of the Stone Age. L'ex-bassiste de Marilyn Manson Jeordie White et le guitariste James Iha (ex-Smashing Pumpkins) permettent au groupe d'achever sa tournée.
La nouvelle formation s'attelle à la composition du second album, Thirteenth Step, qui sort le 16 septembre 2003. Un troisième album paraît l'année suivante, le 2 novembre 2004 : eMOTIVe. L'album ne contient que des reprises de titres anti-militaristes (John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, Marvin Gaye, ...). L'enregistrement d'eMOTIVe a impliqué la plupart des ex et actuels membres de A Perfect Circle.
Parallèlement à eMOTIVe, le groupe a produit un coffret CD/DVD intitulé aMOTION, contenant des clips, des vidéos inédites ainsi que des faces-B et des remixs.
Depuis 2005, A Perfect Circle est en suspens, principalement à cause de l'implication de Keenan avec Tool. La plupart des membres travaillent sur des projets parallèles ou des albums solo. À l'heure actuelle, aucune reformation tant en studio que sur scène n'est envisagée, bien que le groupe ne soit pas officiellement séparé. L'avenir d' A Perfect Circle reste donc, incertain.
eMOTIVe - 2004
Emotive (displayed as eMOTIVe on the album) is the third album by the American rock band A Perfect Circle. It was released on November 1, 2004 (although in the United States on the following day). It was released to coincide with US Presidential election. The album contains 10 political covers, and 2 'original' songs which are also covers. "Passive" is a cover/remake of "Vacant" by the ex-group Tapeworm and "Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm of the War Drums" is also a follow up of the song "Pet" released by A Perfect Circle in 2003 on the album Thirteenth Step. It debuted on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at #2, behind the various artist compilation, Now 17. It was certified Gold by the RIAA on 9 December 2004. The album cover shows Los Angeles in an Armageddon-like state.

Thirteenth Step - 2003
Thirteenth Step is the second studio album by the American rock band A Perfect Circle. The album was released as a compact disc on September 16, 2003. The album was a success, reaching the #2 position on the Billboard charts in its premiere week, selling over 231,000 copies. The RIAA certified it as gold on November 4, 2003 and as platinum on March 24, 2006. The first single from the album was "Weak and Powerless", followed by "The Outsider" and "Blue". The tracks have their remixed versions on a 2004 remix album aMotion.

Mer de Noms is the first studio album by the alternative rock band A Perfect Circle. The album was released as a compact disc on May 23, 2000. It was certified platinum by the RIAA on October 31, 2000. The album entered The Billboard 200 at No. 4 with 188,000 copies sold.
